Joan Smykowski has enjoyed painting and drawing since a child. Luckily she attended a grade
school that had a focused philosophy of incorporating the arts, history and art appreciation into
its curriculum. Many years later, Joan received a BFA in painting from Wayne State University.
Life took another turn after graduating from Wayne State University and she began working in
non-profits for countless years. With much introspectiveness, she returned to creating art. She
experimented with various mediums, and discovered the rewards of combining painting and
pottery.
Presently, Joan is taking pottery classes at Pewabic Pottery. Additionally, she is involved in
various art organizations in the Detroit area. She encourages all parents and teachers to
introduce and incorporate art in their interactions with children.
Joan’s artist statement is simple and direct:
